Solar Class Tactical Explorer
Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:18 pm
The Solar Class is a ridiculously underpowered exploration vessel fitted with plenty of, ahem, tactical equipment, to ensure its survival when exploring quadrants of space known to contain hostile aliens.
The Solar Class however is very expensive to produce, because it takes a lot of advanced technology to fit adequate armor, shielding, navigation, and of course, ahem, tactical equipment on such a small ship. And of course powering them.
The first flock of five of Solar Class vessels left spacedock with the conventional warp core as their power sources, but these proved to be too little to power all the primary systems. Various 'improvements' were made to second generation Solar Class vessels which mostly involved the deletion of non-important subsystems, but these impacted the performance of the test starships too negatively that the second generation ships were never launched. Alternative power means were researched but they never materialized.
The original five Solar Class vessels are still operating in the Beta Quadrant today as early warning defense ships for Star Fleet Tactical. A far cry from the class's original role, but that's Star Fleet for you.
After all, this is the same Star Fleet that has been using the Miranda Class Cannon Fodder for over 400 years.

Woah, this is one of my new favorites of yours, Talmid! The angle of the nacelle pylons, the thickness of the body, the overall shape, they all add up to equal awesome! My only complaint is that the saucer seems a bit thin for a bit too long (just 2 or 3 studs), but then, I'm the one who always builds thicker saucers Great work!

At least they PUT decent (ahem) tactical systems on this ship.
Nice build Talmid. It feels like a generic, but not dull or overused, workhorse of a ship. Good job!
