General Jace, alerted of the warbirds' arrivals, keys in a request to speak with the Sons of Liberty's CO. If what they're trying is what I think they're trying...he's going to want to pick up, and do so quickly...

Unknown to anyone other than those involved, an elite strike team of Grelfucan Force Recon Marines, and members of the Marine Special Operations Aviation Regiment-Why it's called aviation is yet another one of those old-fashioned Navy things...frakking Streflicons...-also addressed as MARSOAR, or just SOAR, as the Army doesn't have Special Forces, Operations, or Warfare units and the Navy's are addressed as NavSpecWar units [OoC: Sorry, I should just make one of those organization threads in the MSI sub-forum, huh? /End OoC], were already prepared for a covert insertion into Romulan space. Luckily for the Sons of Liberty, GT Marines didn't only follow the Human motto of Semper Fidelis-Always Faithful, they also followed the Murictel motto Anver Preflis, Anver e Li Chozs dit Li Mondis-cahlte-Ever Prepared, Ever at The Whim of The 'Powers That Be' (edited for appropriate content-Murictel are a fiesty species who don't understand the concept of 'swearing being not-good'.), and were ready to change missions on a moment's notice.

*Captain Victorson beams back aboard his ship and opens a comm channel to Johnnyred and Turson*

"Sirs, I recommend we go to warp immediately. We can outrun them. Set a course for a minor planet in their Empire, then change course to Romulus partway through. That'll divert their attention away from our true target, and we should be able to catch Romulus by surprise."

*Lieutenant Smythe approaches Commander Turson and whispers in his ear.*

"Sir," he says. "I know you are preoccupied, but General Lei'kaosta wishes to speak with you."

"One thing at a time, Smythe!" hisses Turson. "I am trying to listen to four conversations at once!"

*Turson turns back to Malcor and continues whispering to him.*

"Captain Johnnyred will make the final decision. However, I am confident that our forces may be able to annihilate this party of Romulans before they can get word to the Imperial Romulan government. If not, well...we will have to make outright blitzkrieg on the Star Empire and hope that we bring it to its knees in time."

*Smythes whispers in Turson's ear again.*

"Sir," he says. "I am not trying to be rude, but Captain Victorson suggests warping directly to Romulus."

"That would be prudent," replies Turson. "If Romulus were there. However, I found out from Captain S'ren that the former Romulan homeworld was destroyed, and they have relocated the capital of their empire. As of yet, I don't know where it is, which is just one more problem."

"Shall I request a private intercom dialogue between you and Captain S'ren?" asks Smythe.

"Yes," replies Turson. "and also pipe General Lei'kaosta into the dialogue. I may as well kill two birds with one stone."

*Commander Turson exits the bridge, followed by Malcor (who has unofficially acted as his bodyguard), leaving Johnnyred to talk with the Romulan captain.*

[OOC: At this point, J-red needs to post soon. There needs to be dialogue between him and the Romulan captain (as GM, I shall post the Romulan's part of the dialogue), otherwise--while a bunch of other events are transpiring--it gives the impression that J-red and the Romulan are just staring lidlessly at each other. Safely back aboard the USS Burlington with his escort team back on duty, Captain Gary Vermont can't help but break out into a cold sweat. Not because he doubts the strength of his crew, or that of his starship, but of his own captaining skills. In every previous engagement, he had been accompanied by superiors and peers. Here, he was all alone up there on the commanding pedestal, with only his bridge crew of various Lieutenants and Ensigns to accompany him.

"Commander Kelvyn," he said, addressing his tactical officer. "Say we attempted a microwave scan of the leading Romulan Warbird. Would the scan be of such a frequency that it would be undetectable by the Romulans?"

Lieutenant Commander Yuri Kelvyn took no more than five seconds to formulate an answer to his Captain. "There a 90% chance that would be positive, Captain." he affirmed. "Such a scan would be undetectable by what we know of Romulan sensors."

Gary took a second to make a decision, then nodding that the risk was enough. "Commence said scan of the leading Warbird." Then to his comm officer, Gary ordered, "Lieutenant Evr'oyne, open a subwave channel with Libertarian Command. I believe they will want to see what will happen from now."

Lieutenant Evr'oyne gave a quick "Yes, sir." and was about to get to work, when Gary added, "Oh, and send a conference hail to Minuteman Division as well, I think Fleet Captain Talmid may be interested in joining us as well...."

Vardok rematerialized on board the bridge of the Alth'Indor. Site to site transport is so useful.
"Alright everyone, let's get to work!Excellent, the shields are already raised. Activate the cloaking device and head for zero-six-four mark one-one-one-three point eight at two thirds impulse. Get the disruptors hot and the torpedo tubes loaded, I want the plasma cannons prepped for action and all crew to battle stations double time."

The ship's red alert blared as the now cloaked, nimble Warbird dove away from its previous position and towards the back of the allied fleet. They are acting quite bold.... I doubt that seven Warbirds would attack a fleet of this size alone... They either have something up their sleeve, or they're bluffing, either way, if there are going to be more ships, they'll come from where we don't expect, so that's just where I'll be.

"Hail the Liberty, secure channel," Captain S'ren waits while the hail is accepted.
"Commander Turson, expect the unexpected, a famous Romulan saying goes: 'Misdirection is the key to survival. Never attack what your enemy defends. Never behave as your enemy expects and never reveal your true strength. If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable.' Assume that they have greater numbers or perhaps experimental weapons en route or already stalking us. The Empire has many eyes watching, it is hard to get a fleet this size with open invitations to every major power to the Neutral Zone undetected, much less across it. The Empire would not be so foolish as to openly engage in a battle it feels it cannot possibly win, if they fire, they feel certain of victory."

THE SONS OF LIBERTY - Page 2 Empty Re: THE SONS OF LIBERTY

Whistling. Snapping awake and springing from his cot, Jaeger dove for his mask, pushing it onto his face just as the world exploded around him. The shockwave of an artillery shell threw him onto the ground, which, unexpectedly, saved his life. Shrapnel tore through the tent's fabric walls and roof, flying across the room.

All around, Jaeger could hear screams over the exploding shells, as men died or spore shells infected those around him. Crawling desperately to his cot, Jaeger reached under it and grabbed his Radion Plasma Pistol, or RPP-2. Continuing to lay flat and escape the debris, Jaeger remained frozen for the duration of the barrage.

It was over in less than a minute. Stumbling outside, Jaeger was met with a horrible sight. The ground was cratered, sickly-green spores covering the ground. Almost all of the longhouse-style barrack-tents were burning or ripped to shreds. Screams filled the air, and from all directions. Stumbling, Jaeger entered the first barrack-tent he saw that was still intact, just in time to see a trooper who, amazingly, had been able to get a gas mask on get speared through the abdomen by an infected former buddy of his. Screeching, the creature turned on Jaeger and ran towards him, arms outstretched. Bringing his pistol to bear, Jaeger put a plasma bolt through the creatures forehead, just as more of the creatures, other soldiers from the barracks who hadn't put masks on in time, followed the first. With quick succession, he put down three more: one through the forehead like the first, the rest through chest and the lungs. Looking around, Jaeger could see that most of the troops, about fifty in all, had already died from shrapnel or being torn apart by the Plague creatures.

Running back to the tent flap, Jaeger run right into a miniature dust storm. Looking up, he was greeted by a beautiful sight: a Y-3 dropship with a tank suspended in its grappling hooks. Hovering, the Y-3 slowly descended and, setting the tank, not ten meters from Jaeger, on the spore-covered surface, detached. Quickly it rotated it wings into the flight position, but not before pounding several of the burning barracks with its two 150mm AutoCannons.

Coughing to life, the tank's turret began to rotate away from Jaeger, towards the entrance to the 24001st Company's camp. With a flash, the tank's twin turreted flamethrowers began pouring napalm  into a group of infected soldiers. My soldiers, Jaeger thought in horror. The popping of spore blisters sounding from the burning ex-soldiers made him double over, gagging. He'd heard the same sound numerous times before, but he'd always been fighting nameless poor souls whom he had never meant. They'd never been hordes of people he'd interacted with and cared for on a daily basis.

Sucking air in, Jaeger sprinted over to the tank, gunning down an infected, ghoulish thing that had been sneaking up behind him. Scrambling atop the tank's turret, he gazed around in horror. The same destruction that had befallen his camp spanned similar camps for a good hundred meters in all directions. Tents, tanks; everything burned.

Knocking on the tank's cupola and looking into the tank's exterior camera, Jaeger screamed, "Let me in! By the Lord my God, let me in!" The tank's hatch popped open, and Jaeger jumped in. Even though a particle field lining the rim of the tank's hatch decontaminated anyone getting in the tank, the tank's crew wore gas masks. A necessary precaution.

"Who the heck are you?" barked the tank commander, flipping between exterior camera views of the tank.
"Major Jaeger Schultz, CO of the 24001st Company, sir."
"I should be saying 'sir' to you. Captain Bradley of the 33rd Armor Corps."
"What the heck is going on, Captian?" Jaeger questioned, putting his pistol on safety and slipping it into his holster.
"Those infected freaks did almost the same freakin' thing we did. They hid a bunch of artillery pieces in the hills not too far from here under camo nets. Waited for us to settle down, and then hit us when we weren't lookin'. At least that's what Brass is saying. We were in transit and almost here when the shells started falling, so the pilot set us down in one the of few areas that looked like it needed a fire bath, but didn't have the ground consistency of Swiss Cheese or was covered in tents. You're dang lucky to be alive right now," Bradley said before ordering the driver to start heading west, towards the High Command temporary compound.
"Yes, but a lot of very good men aren't," Jaeger mumbled.
"Ain't that the sorry truth?"
The tank rumbled west, spitting napalm all the way.

"This is a sticky situation, Malcor," says Turson. "I hope that these Rommies are bluffing. I would certainly hate to see--"

*An urgent message is heard on the IC.*

"Commander Turson, you are needed on the bridge. The transmission between Captain Johnnyred and the Romulan captain was ended, and a handful of the ships in our rearguard are being assaulted by Warbirds."

"Diabolical!" cries Turson, flying out his door, with Malcor on his heels.

The USS Burlington had been stationed near the rear of the group, so it was one of the starships to be initially hit with Romulan weapons fire.

The entire ship shook, the inertial dampeners and parking engines working hard to keep the ship steady.  Lights throughout the ship dimmed as the power became strained, and then remained dimmed when the ship went into automatic red alert.

"Shields up!" Gary ordered immediately. "Return fire, phaser spread from the ventral hull.  Give me a report of the aft hull."

"Structural integrity at 60%, armor holding, Captain." Kelvyn said. "Aft torpedo launchers are disabled for safety, aft torpedo bays are in transport to forward bays, also for safety."

"Can we override it?" Gary asked.

"Yes sir, there is a 90% chance of success." Kelvyn.

Success, as in the whole rear section NOT blowing up.  I like this guy, he's very positive. Gary thought. "Override the safety procedures, load aft torpedo tubes and stand by for launch, Hercules Pattern."

All these risks.... Gary grumbled mentally as his crew got to work. I'm really glad we kicked off all the civilians from this ship before we set out on this mission.... I'm turning into a Fleet Captain Talmid! DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN.

Pulling into HQ's hastily erected perimeter, Jaeger disembarked from the tank and made his way over the command tent. Personnel were everywhere, trying to coordinate the chaos. Scanning the crowd, he spotted General Logan Hues and shoved his way through the crowd to meet him.

The general was hunched over a desk, listening to incoming reports, scrolling through his datapad. Standing on the other side of his desk, Jaeger saluted. "General, sir."

"At ease, son," Hues responded wearily. "And how might you be?"

"Major Jaeger Schultz, CO of the 240,001st Infantry Company, sir."

The General glanced up sharply. "Heck, son. Your company's encampment was right smack-dab in the middle of the bombardment. How the heck did you get out?"

"A Y-3 dropped off a tank from the 33rd Armored Division, and I just hopped in with them and rode here."

"Do you know if anyone else from your company got out?"

"No, sir."

Leaning back in his chair, the General let out a long breath. "Well," he finally said, "the best thing you can do right now is get some rest. You've been through more than anyone else here. Our entire line here is a disaster, but I don't think there's anything else you can do at the moment. My secretary can set you up with a cot, probably. Ask around for Lieutenant Gabby."

"Thank you sir," Jaeger said, saluting again before turning to begin his search for the Lieutenant.

---

"For you, sir," said a runner as he handed Jaeger a datapad the next moring. Taking it, Jaeger read:

A casualty report of the events of last night has been compiled. Survivors from the 240,001st number at only 98 men and women, including you. As such, Command has seen fit to redistribute the remaining troops to fill out companies that suffered only minor losses. You, Major Jaeger Schultz, are to be given leave of duty until new recruits can trained. A dropship will be picking you up at 1300 hours to transport you to the YCNS Electoral for transport back to a military planet to oversee the training of the new recruits. Godspeed.

[Turson enters the bridge, with Malcor at his side. Turns to Malcor.]

"I do not like the idea of losing you, Malcor," says Turson. "You are an exceptional warrior, I am sure. But as I say, exceptional warriors crave exceptional combat. By all means, deploy your fighter and give those Romulans a piece of Liberty's velvet-covered iron fist!"

"Sir!" shouts an ensign from the radar. "There are forty Romulan warbirds converging on the fleet."

[Turson stumbles into the Captain's seat as another torpedo blast rocks the Liberty.]

"FORTY?!" he cries in disbelief. "I should've known, I should've known! Hey! Where is the Alth'Indor?"

"She disappeared, sir," replies Lieutenant Smythe.

"Sir!" cries the ensign at the radar. "The Alth'Indor has reappeared! She's flanking the Imperial Warbirds."

"That should keep those Rommies on their toes!" laughs Turson. "How are our shields?"

"Eighty-five percent, sir, and holding steady," says a lieutenant.

"Good!" cries Turson, rising and waving his baton triumphantly. "Fire two acoustic torpedoes at their flagship!"

"Aye, aye, sir!"

[Two acoustic torpedoes launch from the Liberty's forward torpedo tubes and fly toward the Romulan flagship. One torpedo is destroyed by Romulan guns before it can reach, but the other lands solidly on the flagship's hull, tearing a sizable hole in it.]

"Concentrate on their weakness!" bellows Turson. "Punch a hole into it! Then send word to General Jace to release his Recon Marines. Maybe they can enter through that hole and destroy that ship from the inside out."

THE SONS OF LIBERTY - Page 2 Empty Re: THE SONS OF LIBERTY

Mon Jul 29, 2013 11:31 pm
MkIII Transphasic Torpedoes launch from the eight torpedo launchers on the aft of the USS Burlington towards one Romulan Warbird expertly singled out by Commander Kelvyn.

This particular Warbird, identified as the IRW Kor'dac, was exhibiting strange fluctuations in its port warp nacelle, enough for the sensors of the USS Burlington to detect, and hopefully exploit.  Kelvyn hopes he isn't going out on a limb, trying to target this particular Warbird, especially in its tricky location (two other Warbirds are in front of it).

Covered by phaser fire from the Burlington's ventral phaser arrays, the torpedoes veer through the throes of Romulan disruptor fire and photon torpedo spreads, bearing down on the Kor'dac's warp nacelle.

On contact with the Kor'dac's shields, the torpedoes' transphasic properties show themselves by passing through the particle shielding as if they weren't there, and then proceeding to impact various parts of the warp nacelle.

[OOC: The Federation is able to mass produce Transphasic Mark 2 and Mark 3 Torpedoes.  These torpedoes, however, are 'merely' special versions of photon and quantum torpedoes respectively, that utilize transphasic technology to bypass shielding and some forms of hull armor.  I hope this isn't too OP, or they can simply be replaced with the more familiar Photon and Quantum Torpedoes.  In this description, I've already downgraded them a bit from the Creation Lab variants. Razz

Note that these are MUCHO weaker than the Transphasic Torpedoes seen in the Voyager finale.... those are referred to as Mark 1 Transphasic Torpedoes, and are STRICTLY only for emergency use, as they are overpowered, overexpensive, and overlimited in number. Razz[/OOC]

OOC Talmid, Scare just used Acoustic torpedoes, which are basically transphasic torps that use sound. End OOC

Vardok brought his Warbird behind the now decloaked Romulan line and deactivated his own cloak. There were so many enemy ships that they didn't notice a single mid-sized Warbird appear behind them.
"Target the second to last Warbird to starboard, aim to take out their quantum singularities!" [OOC Romulan equivalent to warp cores OOC] The Alth'Indor sends a barrage of disruptor fire into the second to last warbird in line. The escort type Warbird's shields crumble under the withering fire.
"Fire a fill spread of photon torpedoes, aim for engineering," the light warbird tried to flee the incoming fire, but fails to avoid all of the torpedoes. Its quantum singularity goes critical and the light craft implodes, sending molten shards of its hull into the two Warbirds beside it. The ship to its starboard, also an escort type Warbird, takes immense damage from the explosion, and is disabled beyond further use in this battle. The Warbird to the port of the explosion is a much larger, heavily shielded cruiser type vessel, and only receives moderate damage to its shields from the blast.
The other ships in the line realize that they are being attacked be a Romulan Republic Warbird and return fire. Most of the vessels are still focused on the Federation designed ships ahead of them and either have not realized that they are being hit from behind, or are too far away to pose any real threat. Of those ships that do return fire, most of them have the vast majority of their weaponry facing fore, and have to get out of line and turn about to face this unexpected foe. Still, with so many ships, the combined aft arsenals sent a formidable amount of fire at the Alth'Indor. The Romulan Republic Warbird is fast and maneuverable enough to avoid much of the incoming fire, but she still shakes and shudders as she takes disruptor fire.
"Now! Hit the last Warbird to starboard with the plasma cannons!" Vardok ordered; the ship's heavy plasma cannons responded by sending a torrent of superheated gases at the enemy Warbird that impacted against the Romulan shields in a brilliant display of bright green light that left the powerful ship's already weakened shielding offline, and the vessel vulnerable.
"Finish her off with a plasma torpedo."
The Alth'Indor fired a single, heavy plasma torpedo. The large, eerily green ordnance flew slowly towards it's doomed target. Vardok counted the seconds until it hit.
"One... two... three... four... five..." but before he made it to six, the immensely powerful projectile collided with the enemy Warbird and exploded in a brilliant neon green inferno that engulfed its cruiser prey. An instant later, the ship's quantum singularity went critical and the heavy raptor went up in a flash of flames and debris. The Warbird to its port had managed to pull far enough away to escape the full wrath of the blast, but not far enough away to avoid having its own starboard wing torn from its body.
The Alth'Indor also felt the blast, and it shook with the raw force.
"Captain!" A bridge officer called, "shields down to seventy-three percent and falli..." just then the ship shuddered as she took a photon torpedo and was strafed with disruptor fire, "shields at sixty-eight percent, sir! Three enemy escort type Warbirds closing fast!" Vardok gripped his arm rests until his knuckles turned white.
"Activate the cloak and get us out of here," he commanded.
"Cloak is disabled due to damage, sir!" The tactical officer said, rather frantically.
"Then evasive maneuvers, helmsmen! Give our fore shields a chance to recharge."
"Aye, sir," with that the helmsmen pushed the throttle forward and turned the stick, sending the nimble craft whirling away from enemy fire at high impulse.
