Zeerover Beta Heavy Pirate Frigate
Fri Feb 20, 2015 8:39 pm
Pirate refit! Also, I'm pretty sure this is the only time I've ever actually made a refit based on input.
Though doubtlessly useful, the original Zeerover was somewhat ineffective and underpowered. While it’s accessibility made it an excellent entry-level vessel, and it’s modular design vastly increased it’s versatility, Zeerovers eventually proved more or less ineffective when enemies were packing much more powerful vessels such as Spitze escort cruisers, or even Sequitur dreadnoughts. Thus, Bounty Engineering went back to the drawing board and essentially redesigned the Zeerover from the ground up. The newly-commissioned Zeerover Beta featured several large improvements over the Alpha: an entirely redesigned (and much more powerful) power system, two additional secondary warp cores, heavier armor, an improved-output impulse engine layout, far superior shielding, and specialized assault pods located on the front of the vessel. Compared to alphas, Betas can hit harder, last longer, and even capture enemy ships using the aforementioned assault pods.
Whereas Alphas rarely saw “frontline” combat in anything other than support roles, Betas are quite often used by well-off pirate flotillas as both support and direct-combat ships. The design is so popular, it has come to be the workhorse of countless pirate fleets and symbolize the omnipresent pirate threat in fringe space.
So Dino decided to, instead of commenting on the first Zeerover, PM me a modified .lxf with improvements- most of which I have adopted in some capacity here. Very little changed structurally; it’s mostly aesthetics and such. Say what you want; I like it.

Aw, I'm flattered! I see you figured out what to do with those new hardpoints I added. (Talks to my computer) COMEST THOU HITHER WINKY FACE!!! WHERE ARE THEE?! Oh... there it is.
I hope you didn't take my little edits as my distaste for the ship, rather, I liked it so much, that I wanted to get my hands on it. (JK about getting my hands on it, I DO really love this design though!) I just thought that since it needed so little to go from very good to great, I would just show rather than try to tell.
In my opinion, you figured out EXACTLY what you needed to do to make this ship absolutely perfect in the refit. The one thing I wanted to add but couldn't figure out how without spending a long time on it was the Impulse engines... and you absolutely NAILED those in the refit. GREAT work! And the phaser arrays added to the saucer are just... BEAUTIFUL. They MAKE this ship for me! It's absolutely GORGEOUS!
And I'm flattered that you kept my aesthetic (non length related) nacelle changes, I'm glad you like them.
Consider my suggestion LXF to be the highest form of praise that I could possibly give. It's rare that a ship grabs me in such a way that I NEED to see it "perfect" because it just deserves to be that way. This is one of those ships. It was already VERY good, but you took it up to absolute stunning perfection in my opinion.
Tetra.... you are REALLY getting good at ship building.... I am truly DEEPLY impressed. This has to be one of my favorites from you.

Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it.
It's such a wonderful design! I especially like the weapons on it. The layered primary hull is simply gorgeous, and personally I really like the warp nacelle and pylon design, though I do agree with S-H that the zebra colors are unusual.

Dino- I was actually quite honored that you went through the extra effort to make an .lxf; it was hugely helpful for the Beta. Yeah, the impulse engines were easily my least favorite bit in the original (not in the least because they were right above the hangar door and would probably irradiate any pilots flying by ). Well, technically speaking, they aren't actually phaser arrays; they're just random things I decided to stick on the hull. Personally, I thought they made the ship look a bit... busy, but I guess not. And yeah, I loved your new nacelles; they actually hit the TOS-movie-style aesthetic I was going for. Thanks!
S-H: Dunno if it's just me, but "well-built junker" seems like a bit of an oxymoron (though I get what you're saying). Pylons are a bit flimsy, true, by I have no idea how to make them not-flimsy; I'm not great with that. As for the zebra nacelles- well, as I mentioned, it's a style choice (though, again, I do see where you're coming from; they're a bit busy). Huge thanks!
J-red: Again, colors were an intentional style choice. I actually though then saucer was a bit too thick- though I suppose "too thick" isn't really a thing here.

S-H wasn't saying that the nacelles were flimsy, he said the pylons were, which actually, they look pretty much like they have the same thickness of a Sovereign class.

I think that the striped nacelles might work better if the paint scheme was mirrored elsewhere in the design; or if the amount of striping is cut in half. The pylons do look a tad thin compared to the rest of the ship's bulky style, but not too thin for a Trek design IMO.
And "well built junker" would perfectly describe say, reliable, old, well built vehicles with a lot of miles on them. (EG, old US made Pickup trucks)

Oh! I neglected to mention the ramscoops on the nacelles are awesome! I really like the design!

Yeah, that was all Dino. As I believe I said, I just copy-and-pasted his nacelles.
