The Draugr are avian in appearance, albeit with some amount of reptilian characteristics. They are quite tall, averaging 2.44 meters in height, possessing beaks lined with dozens of tiny, razorlike teeth and four primary limbs. Two of these limbs form arms, which are double-jointed and end in claws. The Draugr have relatively decentralized nervous system, with a brain-like organ located roughly in the center of the body connected to sensory organs via high-speed transmissionary neurons. Interestingly, Draugr physiology seems to correspond to their clan; each clan appears to be comprised of a single distinct subspecies, with its member's plumage directly correlating with the color scheme of its vessels. Xenoanthropolgy division reports insufficient data to say for certain, but what we do have suggests this as a very strong possibility.
Testing on our limited supply of live specimens suggests the Draugr live in symbiosis with a species of microorganism found in their bloodstream. Instead of having a dedicated digestive tract, the Draugr seem to use these protozoa-like lifeforms to break down their food inside the bloodstream directly, similar to the intestines of more familiar species. These protozoans themselves require nitrogen and produce fairly large amounts of oxygen, which accounts for why the Draugr require the former and much less of the latter to breathe; indeed, the atmosphere aboard most Draugr vessels is notably oxygen-poor.
These tests also hinted at a very intriguing fact: almost all Draugr tested were, by our standards, in fairly poor health. Tissues derived from stimulated cell growth in laboratory conditions were far healthier than those directly from recently-deceased specimens; indeed, experiments on said specimens before termination implied most Draugr are diseased and suffer mild malnutrition. Attempts to rectify these in controlled conditions have not yet been attempted. It is possible that the segment of the Draugr population serving on combat vessels are in particularly bad shape; more likely, however, this is an issue endemic throughout their entire race, a consequence of countless generations spent on their phantom fleets.
