Cruiser - Star Cruiser IIb Light Bomber Empty Star Cruiser IIb Light Bomber

Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:51 pm
In order of introduction, the Star Falcon, Star Cruiser, and Star Phoenix represent Star Force's backbone when it comes to aerospace combat.  While the other two metal birds have gone through multiple new and various phases and variants, the Star Cruiser has lead a somewhat more conservative life....

The top of the line "Improved" variant of the "II" Generation Star Cruiser (also known as Star Cruiser IIb) is a very complex piece of engineering.  So complex, it requires a flight crew of three.  One to fly, one to operate the bombs and communications, and one to man the much improved rear gun.*

*The rear gun and the Grumman Hellcat landing gear are courtesy of Federation Captain SpitfireMad, who foresaw these upgrades to the Star Cruiser II, bringing to life the Star Cruiser IIb "Improved".

Let's start with the shape of the Star Cruiser.  The Star Cruiser is very long, made even longer by the length of its guns.  This.... isn't the most practical idea, but if it isn't broke, don't fix it.  The ventral (or more common dorsal) view has lead to some pilots (or enemies) to nickname it the "wraith" by its distinctive, awe inspiring, fear inducing silhouette.  That's enough reason to keep it looking the way it does. Laughing

Next, weapons!  There is so much forward facing weaponry on this ship that it needs really heavy duty power generators to power them all.  Unlike the Star Falcon and Star Phoenix which have weapons blockers, the Star Cruiser is able to fire all weapons simultaneously, because that's its purpose, to utterly demolish all opposition with just the pull of a trigger.

For targets that aren't reachable with energy weapons, six bombs and two rockets can do the rest....

You all know about the rear gun already.

And now propulsion.  Powered by a more conventional two engine setup, these engines are used ONLY for propulsion.  No special power-the-weapons stuff like the fighters have.  The Star Cruiser is capable of warp speed.

Otherwise, the Star Cruiser is quite slow, and relies heavily on escort fighters.  That's quite alright.... Laughing

Lastly, defenses.  Aside from the rear gun which has been mentioned three times now, the Star Cruiser has a standard shield generator and is covered in gigawanium ablative armor, making it even slower.

Pilots who have flown the Star Cruiser like to describe it as a land yacht.  Interpret that however you like. Laughing

^^^ Scare hit the nail right on the head... although I don't know if he hit it hard enough... I'd have used a few more adjectives. Razz

wow....

BRILLIANT! so SMOOTH and SLEEK! AGGRESSIVE! FIERCE! BEAUTIFUL! AWESOME! GREAT! STUNNING! AWE INSPIRING! GORGEOUS! DEADLY! POWERFUL! EPIC! near PERFECTION! (much closer and it would cause viewers brains to explode from an overload of coolness Razz ) COOL!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!!!!!

The rear gun, the profile, the split wings, the engines, the sloped dorsal side... this is simply one GREAT fighter!!!!!

I do have ONE suggestion that doesn't relate to things I've already said. NICKNAME THIS THING THE WRATH!!! (in the title) Razz
such as:
Star Cruiser IIb "Wraith" Light Bomber
It's just too cool for "Star Cruiser" it needs a pilot favorite nickname... like the A-10 Thunderbolt II is known as the "Warthog"

Anyways.... I LOVE this bomber.... it's so... sleek and aggressive... WELL done Talmid!!!! Very Happy

Not bad! It reminds me a LOT of the ARC-170 fighter from the Clone Wars-era Old Republic, and it's a very good fighter! My only suggestion is that perhaps you should double the size of the engines/thrusters, or even add two-four more. Also, you may want to redesignate it as a fighter-bomber, as its S-foils look like they would provide enough maneuverability to engage in actual air superiority combat. But other than that, great job! I like it!

O_O I wasn't expecting answers of this type. Razz

Well, fine, it is pretty agile, in ROLLING. But when it comes to actually TURNING, the Star Cruiser is a no no. Razz

It is wAY too long to be a fighter, really. The closest in design (IMO) to this is the Star Falcon, and the reason that's so successful is because it isn't huge and long.

Seriously. Razz
